Development Mode exposes particular developer privileges such as (un)installing BAR files and listing installed applications over WiFi, accessing a SSH terminal and much more. Development Mode requires a device password to be set, and the mode automatically expires after ten days from being set.

Development Mode is commonly used either by developers wishing to test code before sending it to BlackBerry World, or by people wishing to load converted Android APKs onto their devices. However, it is possible to install applications without developer mode enabled by using Sachesi with a USB connection as well.
